Blazers To Interview Nets Assistant Mike D’Antoni A Second Time

Nets assistant and former Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni will interview for the Trail Blazers’ vacancy a second time this week, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.Mike D'Antoni

D’Antoni is among several top candidates for the position, joining Spurs assistant Becky Hammon and Clippers assistant Chauncey Billups. Hammon interviewed for a second time Monday, and Billups is scheduled to do the same this week.

D’Antoni clearly has a strong interest in the position and the opportunity to coach star guard Damian Lillard, according to The Athletic’s Sam Amick.

D’Antoni just completed his first season as a assistant under Steve Nash with the Nets. He previously spent four years with the Rockets before that. On both teams, D’Antoni has coached star guard James Harden, who gave D’Antoni a ringing endorsement before the season.

“Mike’s a unbelievable coach,” Harden said, adding that D’Antoni was one of the reasons he wanted to come to Brooklyn.

D’Antoni, 70, has also coached the Lakers, Nuggets, Suns and Knicks. The Magic, Pacers and Celtics also have coaching vacancies and D’Antoni has been mentioned as a possibility for the Pacers as well. He has compiled a 627-572 record in 16 seasons overall.

The Blazers are looking to replace Terry Stotts, who mutually parted ways with the franchise after nine seasons and eight straight playoff appearances.
