Cavs Notes: Sexton, Altman, Love, Draft

While Collin Sexton has been the subject of trade rumors, given his approaching eligibility for a rookie-scale extension, some around the Cavaliers guard believe he remains in the organization’s long-term plans, per Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.Collin Sexton

The front office may not be so sure, though.

Sexton, 22, is cherished by the Cavs. He is the team’s leading scorer who plays hard and has exhibited great durability, missing just 12 games in his three seasons combined. But there is the matter of his contract. If he seeks the maximum deal (he will), general manager Koby Altman has to determine if Sexton truly is the top option on a winning team.

Otherwise, the Cavs may just take another guard with the No. 3 pick in the draft, move on from Sexton and maintain there salary-cap flexibility. You can read more of my thoughts on this in my latest Dribbles right here.

More from Cleveland

  • Altman didn’t get into specifics on the team’s goals for next season in an interview with Jason Lloyd of The Athletic in an interview on Bally Sports. “I don’t want to put the pressure and the burden on the young core that it’s playoffs or bust, although that’s sort of what they’re talking about,” Altman told Lloyd. “If it’s the play-in tournament, if it’s playoffs, that’s where their mindset is and what they’re thinking about every day.”
  • Either way, Lloyd indicated the pressure is on, given that the upcoming No. 3 overall pick is the Cavs’ fourth top eight selection in the past four years. Lloyd opined that the Cavs should trade Sexton for a proven player.
  • In case you missed it, Altman offered praise for Kevin Love‘s selection to the U.S. men’s basketball team. But the GM added Love needs to have a “bounce-back season” for the Cavs.
  • The names you know may not be the only ones being considered by the Cavs in the draft. You can check out some more possibilities here.
