Chinese Basketball Association Closing Doors On Foreign Players

The Chinese Basketball Association appears to be on its way to conducting next season without foreign players, per reports, including Emiliano Carchia of Sportando.Lance Stephenson

Americans have long found a haven in the CBA, with veterans such as Lance Stephenson, Tyler Hansbrough, Marreese Speights and Shabazz Muhammad among those who played there this past season.

Per Carchia, CBA shareholders have made their decision on disallowing foreign players moving forward, submitting to the General Administration of Sports for approval.

“If the proposal is approved, the CBA season will start without foreigners,” Carchia wrote.

As it stands, only a limited amount of foreign players are allowed on each team. It has not been determined if this rule applies just to next season, or if the change will be permanent.

The CBA was founded in 1995 and consists of 19 teams.

Again, the list of former NBA players who have played in the CBA is long — from Stephon Marbury to Tracy McGrady to Gilbert Arenas to Steve Francis to Metta World Peace and J.R. Smith.
