Combine Notes: Cavs, Allen, Rockets, Wieskamp, Thor

The Cavaliers own the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, and given that Oklahoma State guard Cade Cunningham is expected to go first to the Pistons, Cleveland will theoretically have its choice of one of three other prospects.NBA Combine

Those players: USC center Evan Mobley, Gonzaga guard Jalen Suggs or G League Ignite guard Jalen Green.

But per Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, those aren’t the only prospects the Cavs connected with at the NBA Combine. They also interviewed G League Ignite forward Jonathan Kuminga and Duke forward Jalen Johnson.

Along with all of the above, per Fedor, Florida State forward Scottie Barnes is also on the Cavs’ radar.

Of course, the Rockets own the No. 2 pick and will play a role in the Cavs’ ultimate decision. Still, Cleveland will have its choice of a player who is undoubtedly near the very top of its draft board.

More from the Combine

  • Should the Cavs end up with Mobley, it seems likely they would consider a sign-and-trade arrangement with current center Jarrett Allen, as Terry Pluto of Cleveland.com relayed. Allen, acquired in an early season trade with the Nets, is entering restricted free agency.
  • Rockets general manager Rafael Stone hinted that he’s open to trading the No. 2 pick, per Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle. But Stone was otherwise evasive. “The goal is to find a star player,” he said. “When you bring in young players especially, you’re really looking for star potential. I wouldn’t use the word ‘expect.’ I don’t want to put that pressure on a player. I do think we’re likely to get somebody really, really talented if we (keep) the pick.”
  • Draft expert Chad Ford listed Iowa guard/forward Joe Wieskamp and Texas center Jericho Sims as “big winners” to emerge from the Combine. Ford even went as far as to imply that Wieskamp warrants late-first round consideration.
  • Auburn forward/center JT Thor is another prospect who is making an apparent quick climb on the draft boards, per Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Wasserman. There has been talk Thor could go as high as No. 17 to the Grizzlies.
