The Magic have officially hired Jamahl Mosley as head coach, the team announced.
Mosley had been an assistant with the Mavericks and a candidate for multiple vacancies over the past several seasons. He finally secured the job.
“We would like to welcome Jamahl and his family to the Magic family,” president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman stated in a press release. “Within the NBA coaching community, Jamahl is considered a rising star. His coaching path is rooted in player development. He is a communicator and connector, and we look forward to him leading our group.”
The Magic are going through a bit of a rebuild, mutually parting ways with ex-coach Steve Clifford after the season.
While this is hardly a splashy hire, Mosley has been a favorite of the Mavericks players, including star Luka Doncic, and has a reputation as someone who knows how to develop talent.
Mosely, 42, has been an assistant with the Mavericks since 2014. Before that, he was an assistant with the Cavaliers (2010-14) and Nuggets (2007-10). He spent two years in a player development role with the Nuggets from 2005-07.
His deal with the Magic is for four years, according to Adrian Wojarowski of ESPN.
