Mavericks vice president of basketball operations Michael Finley is an early candidate for the team’s available general manager position, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times.

The Mavericks parted ways with former GM Donnie Nelson on Monday. Nelson had been with the franchise for 24 years.

Per Stein, along with Finley, the Mavs have hired a search firm to potentially pursue external candidates. That firm is Sportsology, and headed by longtime English soccer executive Mike Forde, Stein noted.

Finley, 48, once was a star shooting guard for the Mavs (1996-2005) before joining the front office nearly a decade ago. He interviewed for a front office position with the Bulls last offseason.

Nelson is the son of longtime NBA coach Don Nelson.

“I just want to thank Donnie for his 24 years of service to this organization,” Mavs owner Mark Cuban said in a statement. “Donnie has been instrumental to our success and helped bring a championship to Dallas. His hard work, creativity, and vision made him a pioneer. Donnie will always be a part of the Mavs family and I wish him all the best.”
