Nuggets assistant coach Wes Unseld Jr. appears to be gaining traction as the Magic ramp up their search for a new coach, according to Shams Charania and Josh Robbins of The Athletic.
Former Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts and former Nets coach and current Clippers assistant Kenny Atkinson also recently have been linked to Orlando’s vacancy.
Unseld has completed two interviews with the Magic, Charania and Robbins reported. He is also a reported candidate for the Wizards, where his late father, Wes Unseld, starred for the franchise, as well as served separate stints as coach and general manager.
Unseld Jr. interviewed for the Wizards vacancy on Thursday, per Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today. Former NBA guard and current 76ers assistant Sam Cassell is also said to be a serious candidate for the Wizards.
Unseld Jr. was an assistant with the Wizards from 2005-11. Prior to joining the Nuggets in 20015, he also served stints as an assistant with the Wizards and Magic.
Other reported candidates for the Magic include Spurs assistant Becky Hammon, Suns assistant Willie Green and Mavericks assistant Jamahl Mosley. Magic assistant coaches Tyrone Corbin, Pat Delany and Steve Hetzel have each interviewed for the job as well.
Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman is trying to find a replacement for Steve Clifford, who mutually parted ways with the franchise following the season.
