Indiana is also expected to hire former Butler guard and current Hornets assistant Ronald Nored, per the Indianapolis Star’s Nat Newell and J. Michael.
Pierce, 45, was fired by Atlanta earlier this season after a 14-20 start. The Hawks went on a tear afterward, reaching the Eastern Conference finals under Pierce assistant and current interim coach Nate McMillan.
Overall, Pierce compiled a 63-120 record in two-plus seasons with the Hawks. Before that, he served as an assistant in the NBA since 2007, with the Cavaliers, Warriors, Grizzlies and 76ers.
Nored, 31, has been an assistant with the Hornets for the past three seasons. He went 44-56 in two seasons as head coach of the G League’s Long Island Nets.
Carlisle was named coach of the Pacers last week after 13 years with the Mavericks. He coached the Pacers previously from 2003-07.
“This is my kind of team. As I look at the roster and as I’ve talked to all these guys, I have an even greater feeling that it’s a group of guys I will have a blast working with,” Carlisle told reporters. “I like the way they’re talking. We’re going to find a way to play better defense and we’ve got to get back to the playoffs and win in the playoffs.”
