Pistons’ Troy Weaver: Cade Cunningham ‘For Sure At Top Of The List’

For the first time since 1970, the Pistons have the No. 1 overall pick. They took Bob Lanier back then. They are expected to do the same with Oklahoma State guard Cade Cunningham this time.Troy Weaver

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said prior to the NBA Draft lottery that Cunningham would visit just one team before the draft — whoever won the No. 1 pick. That, folks, would be the Pistons.

“We get to add another young player to the restoration process,” Pistons general manager Troy Weaver said from the NBA Combine in Chicago, via the Detroit News. “We’re excited to be in this position.”

ESPN draft expert Mike Schmitz referred to Cunningham as a “jumbo shot creator.” Still, as is almost always the case, Weaver wouldn’t say for sure that’s who the Pistons will take.

“We’ll look at everything; we’ll look at five guys in the draft,” Weaver said. “We’ll uncover every stone and put ourselves in the right position to get the right guy for the Pistons.”

That said, Weaver did admit that Cunningham is a “talented young man and he’s for sure at the top of the list.”

The Pistons finished 20-52 and coach Dwane Casey already has some nice talent in the likes of forwards Jerami Grant and Saddiq Bey, as well as rising shooting guard Josh Jackson.

The NBA Draft is scheduled for July 29.
