Nuggets assistant Wes Unseld Jr. has emerged as the leading candidate for the Wizards’ coaching vacancy, as Hoops Wire first reported earlier this week and sources reiterated Thursday.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski also reported that Unseld is “a leading candidate,” and has interviewed for the Magic vacancy as well.
Unseld Jr. the son of the late Wes Unseld, a franchise legend who won a championship as a player, before going on to serve separate stints as coach and general manager.
Meanwhile, Unseld Jr. was an assistant with the Wizards from 2005-11. Prior to joining the Nuggets in 20015, he also was an assistant with the Magic. His history with the Washington franchise would make him a natural favorite.
Per Wojnarowski, the list of others being considered for the opening includes Mavericks assistant Jamahl Mosley, and Bucks assistants Charles Lee and Darvin Ham. Mosley appears to have the inside track for the Magic vacancy, Wojnarowski wrote.
Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard is looking to replace Scott Brooks, whose contract was not renewed after the season.
