Heat president Pat Riley said he spoke to power forward Bam Adebayo about delaying Adebayo’s contract extension back in November, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.
Such a move would have give the Heat more than $12 million in available cap space this summer, but Adebayo wanted the extension right away. “We tried to convince him this could be different,” Riley told reporters.
Riley and the Heat relented, with Riley saying he had no issues giving Adebayo the extension because Adebayo deserved it.
As it stands, the Heat have several contract decisions approaching, starting with guard Victor Oladipo, an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Also, star guard/forward Jimmy Butler is eligible for a four-year, $181 million extension this summer — but the Heat could hold off on those discussions, given such a deal would take Butler to his 36th birthday, wrote Bobby Marks of ESPN.
