Suns Break Franchise Record For Longest Win Streak With 18 Straight

With Thursday’s win over the Pistons, 114-103, the 2021-22 Suns broke a franchise record for longest win streak with their 18th consecutive victory of the season. The previous record of 17 straight wins was set by the 2006-07 Suns team.

Even without their star guard in Devin Booker, who left Tuesday’s game against the Warriors with a hamstring strain, the Suns displayed enough firepower to still reach the historic mark over the bottom-of-the-barrel Pistons.

“I haven’t talked about streaks of any kind just because we have been so focused on improving,” Suns coach Monty Williams told reporters. “But it is really cool to be a part of something like that.”

One of the players expected to see an increased role in the absence of Booker was Cameron Johnson. Johnson played for 27 minutes against the Pistons and tallied 19 points, six rebounds and two assists. Filling in for Booker on Tuesday, Johnson contributed 14 points for the record-tying win.

Seven different Suns players scored in double digits. Chris Paul had a tepid night with only 12 points; meanwhile Mikal Bridges, Cameron Payne and Deandre Ayton all went for 17+ points.

Still, the leading scorer for the evening was Detroit’s Jerami Grant, who scored 34 points. No. 1 overall pick Cade Cunningham added 19 points and five assists on 31 minutes.

Hoping to keep the all-time record running, the Suns will face off against the Warriors on Friday, this time for a Warriors’ home game at Chase Center. Before Tuesday’s loss, the Warriors defeated the Clippers at Staples with a 15-point win.

The Sun improved to 19-3 on the season with Thursday’s win, while the Pistons fell to 4-18.
