Nuggets assistant Wes Unseld Jr. and Bucks assistant Darvin Ham are the frontrunners for the Wizards’ coaching vacancy, with Bucks assistant Charles Lee also in the mix, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Last week, sources told Hoops Wire that Unseld Jr. has the inside track. Ham and Lee, of course, are part of coach Mike Budenholzer‘s staff of assistants in the NBA Finals.
Unseld Jr. the son of the late Wes Unseld, a franchise legend who won a championship as a player, before going on to serve separate stints as coach and general manager.
Meanwhile, Unseld Jr. was an assistant with the Wizards from 2005-11. Prior to joining the Nuggets in 20015, he also was an assistant with the Magic. His history with the Washington franchise would make him a natural favorite.
Ham has assisted Budenholzer for the entire three seasons with the Bucks, and five years before that with the Hawks. He has also been an assistant with the Lakers and spent the 2010-11 season as head coach of the New Mexico Thunderbirds of the G League.
Ham spent eight seasons as a player in the NBA, winning a championship with the Pistons in 2004.
Lee has been an assistant under Budenholzer since 2014, first with the Hawks. Like Budenholzer, Lee has been with the Bucks since 2018. He has never been a head coach.
Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard is looking to replace Scott Brooks, whose contract was not renewed after the season.
