Rumor: Heat, Wizards Talked Terry Rozier, Marcus Smart Trade

The Miami Heat and Washington Wizards talked about a trade involving Terry Rozier and Marcus Smart, according to NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer.

A trade didn’t happen, though, and Smart signed with the Los Angeles Lakers after getting bought out by the Wizards.

“One more via Fischer: Sources say Miami has explored the feasibility of trading away veteran guard Terry Rozier this offseason,” Stein and Fischer wrote. “Jake says Miami weighed a Rozier-for-Marcus Smart swap but could not reach an organizational consensus on whether such a trade was a clear upgrade. Smart ultimately secured a buyout from Washington on July 19 that ultimately enabled him to sign with the Lakers as a free agent.”

The Heat have been busy this offseason. They traded Kyle Anderson and Kevin Love to the Utah Jazz and acquired Norman Powell from the Los Angeles Clippers in the three-team deal.

Miami also traded Duncan Robinson to the Detroit Pistons for Simone Fontecchio and re-signed Davion Mitchell.

The Heat lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the 2025 NBA playoffs in four games.

Rozier, who remains under federal investigation on a potential gambling probe, will make $26.6 million next season in the final year of his contract. He appeared in 64 games for the Heat last season and averaged 10.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists while shooting 39.1% from the field, 29.5% from beyond the arc and 85.2% from the free-throw line.

Smart played for the Memphis Grizzlies and Wizards last season. He averaged 9.0 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 34 games while shooting 39.3% from the floor, 34.8% from beyond the arc and 76.1% from the free-throw line.

Lakers superstar Luka Dončić recruited Smart to Los Angeles.
