According to Grant Afseth of NBA Analysis Network, the Atlanta Hawks could trade center Clint Capela this offseason.
The Hawks want to expand Onyeka Okongwu‘s role moving forward.
“Capela will earn $22.3 million on an expiring salary during the 2024-25 season,” Afseth wrote. “Sources tell NBA Analysis Network that the team desires to expand Onyeka Okongwu‘s role in the future, making Capela a trade candidate to watch this summer.”
Capela is averaging 11.3 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists this season for the Hawks while shooting 56.0% from the field and 65.1% from the free-throw line. He has 31 double-doubles.
Capela is making $20.6 million this season. He will make $22.3 million next season in the final year of his contract.
Afseth reported that the Dallas Mavericks were interested in trading for Capela last summer. A deal didn’t happen because the Mavericks “were unwilling to include their lottery pick or any of their young developmental prospects in a trade package.”
Capela has career averages of 12.3 points, 10.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists with the Houston Rockets and Hawks. He was the 25th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.
The Hawks are 31-39 on the season. They are in 10th place in the Eastern Conference standings. If the regular season ended today, Atlanta would face the Chicago Bulls in the 9-10 play-in tournament game.
