According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Atlanta Hawks “know” they have to trade Trae Young or Dejounte Murray this summer.
Rumors are going around in NBA circles that the Hawks could trade Young instead of Murray this offseason. Both guards have the same agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group.
The Los Angeles Lakers came close to acquiring Murray this season. However, a deal didn’t happen because the Hawks wanted Austin Reaves and the Lakers were not interested in parting ways with the youngster.
Along with the Lakers, Murray drew trade interest from the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls and Utah Jazz, sources told Hoops Wire. Murray is averaging 21.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.3 blocks this season.
The Hawks signed Murray to a four-year, $114 million extension last summer. Murray will make $24.8 million next season.
NBA insider Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer is reporting that the Hawks are “highly likely” to trade Young after this summer. Young signed a five-year, $215 million extension with the Hawks in August 2021. He’ll make $43 million next season and $45 million in 2025-26.
According to NBA reporter Howard Beck of The Ringer, the Hawks discussed a Young trade with the San Antonio Spurs before this year’s trade deadline. Young is averaging 26.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, 10.9 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.2 blocks this season.
The Lakers will probably talk to the Hawks about a Young and Murray trade this offseason.
Atlanta won 41 games last season and lost to the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2023 playoffs in six games. The team is only 24-31 this season.
Murray has career averages of 14.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.3 blocks with the San Antonio Spurs and Hawks.
Meanwhile, Young holds career averages of 25.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, 9.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.2 blocks with Atlanta.
