Report: Cavaliers Could Make More Moves This Offseason

According to NBA reporter Evan Dammarell of Right Down Euclid, the Cleveland Cavaliers could make more moves this offseason. Koby Altman, Cleveland Cavaliers, NBA

The Cavaliers hired Kenny Atkinson as their new head coach and signed guard Donovan Mitchell and big man Evan Mobley to extensions.

“Simply put, the Cavaliers aren’t just sitting on their hands, trying to run back the same team from last year; however, they’re not looking to make a trade just to make a trade,” Dammarell reported. “Sources from across the league have shared with Right Down Euclid that there’s a belief that the Cavaliers know that the early moves they made in the offseason aren’t all they have planned. Instead, the feeling is that it’s the beginning of the next steps, and as the summer rolls along, Cleveland will strike when things are at their quietest. Just like this organization, forever patient and pragmatic in their approach, tends to do.”

The Cavaliers went 48-34 this past season. They defeated the Orlando Magic in the first round of the playoffs in seven games and lost to the Boston Celtics in the second round in five games.

Cleveland hasn’t added any new players to the roster this offseason. Several teams are interested in acquiring Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen, but the Cavaliers are not interested in trading either player.

Sources told Hoops Wire that Mitchell doesn’t want the Cavaliers to trade Garland or Allen. Atkinson, who coached Allen on the Brooklyn Nets, wants Allen and Garland to stay in The Land as well.

Under JB Bickerstaff, the Cavaliers were 20th in the NBA in points per game, seventh in points per game allowed, 18th in offensive rating, sixth in defensive rating and 13th in net rating in 2023-24.

Atkinson went 118-190 with the Nets in the regular season. He was 1-4 in the playoffs.
