Report: De’Aaron Fox Doesn’t Want To Play For Lakers

According to NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN, De’Aaron Fox doesn’t want to play for the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Sacramento Kings are expected to open up talks to potentially trade Fox, who has a target destination in mind.

Fox is making $34.8 million this season. He’ll make $37.1 million next season.

One of the top players in the NBA, Fox can become an unrestricted free agent in 2026. He’s averaging 25.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.5 blocks this season while shooting 46.8% from the field, 32.4% from beyond the arc and 82.6% from the free-throw line.

If Fox earns a spot on one of the league’s All-NBA teams, he would be eligible for a five-year supermax worth a projected $345 million in new money next summer.

By comparison, Fox’s largest allowable extension this offseason was three years, $165 million.

The Kings are 24-22. They are in 10th place in the Western Conference standings. Mike Brown was fired as head coach after the team started 13-18. Interim head coach Doug Christie has gone 11-4.

“For one, I’m in no rush,” Fox said in October about an extension. “For two, I just want to make sure where we’re at, because people have seen the league — like, turnover of a team can happen in the matter of a month or two or six months. I mean, if we were contending for a championship, (it might be different). Like, obviously, (the Boston Celtics’) Jayson (Tatum) just won a championship or (the Miami Heat’s) Bam (Adebayo), who has been to the finals twice. I’m just using people who are in my class (who have signed extensions). They’ve already kind of been through that, done that. So yeah, they have that security of (having done) that. For me, obviously, we’re continuing to build.”
