One NBA analyst proposed that the Brooklyn Nets and Atlanta Hawks make a Dejounte Murray trade this offseason.
Dan Favale of Bleacher Report proposed the following trade idea between the Nets and Hawks:
Brooklyn Nets Receive: Dejounte Murray
Atlanta Hawks Receive: Dorian Finney-Smith, Dennis Schröder, Phoenix’s 2025 first-round pick (top-eight protection; turns into 2028 and 2029 seconds if not conveyed); 2027 first-round pick (second most favorable from Brooklyn, Houston, Philadelphia or Phoenix)
Murray appeared in 78 games for the Hawks this season. He averaged 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.3 blocks while shooting 45.9% from the field, 36.3% from beyond the arc and 79.4% from the free-throw line.
“The Nets need a primary ball-handler and playmaker,” Favale wrote. “Murray isn’t elite in either category, but he’s an upgrade over everyone they have and immediately makes life easier, at both ends, on Mikal Bridges. Pairing these two fringe-stars doesn’t automatically vault Brooklyn into contention, but the balance on their contracts will preserve future flexibility. Bridges remains a steal with two years and $48.2 million left on his deal. Murray’s four-year, $114 million extension kicks in next season and is set to age like a fine wine.”
The Hawks signed Murray to a four-year, $114 million extension in July 2023. Murray will make $24.8 million next season.
One of the top two-way players in the NBA, Murray has career averages of 15.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.3 blocks with the San Antonio Spurs and Hawks.
“Jettisoning two first-rounders isn’t nothing. But the Nets get to keep most of their ultra-distant goodies from other teams, and this deal gets easier to embrace knowing they’d retain their access to over $60 million in cap space next summer (depending on various other roster decisions),” Favale wrote.
The Nets are interested in acquiring Murray from the Hawks, sources told Hoops Wire.
Atlanta has the first overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. The franchise could trade Murray and Trae Young this offseason.
