One NBA writer proposed that the Los Angeles Lakers acquire Dejounte Murray from the Atlanta Hawks this offseason.
Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report proposed the following trade idea between the Lakers and Hawks:
The Deal: Dejounte Murray for Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, Jalen Hood-Schifino, a 2029 first-round pick and a 2030 first-round pick swap
The Lakers came close several times this season to acquiring Murray from the Hawks. Murray has the same agent (Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group) as LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
The Hawks are expected to trade Murray or Trae Young this summer, a source told Hoops Wire. The Lakers will have interest in both guards, the source said.
“This season, when Young was off the floor, Murray had a slightly positive plus-minus and averaged 25.2 points and 8.3 assists per 75 possessions,” Bailey wrote. “The potential fit with him, Davis and LeBron isn’t quite as clean as it is with Young, but the defense would be better, and L.A. would likely have to give up less to get Murray.”
Murray appeared in 78 games for the Hawks this season. He averaged 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.3 blocks while shooting 45.9% from the field, 36.3% from beyond the arc and 79.4% from the free-throw line.
Murray, who turns 28 in September, has career NBA averages of 15.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.3 blocks with the San Antonio Spurs and Hawks. He doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract.
The Hawks signed Murray to a four-year, $114 million extension in July 2023. Murray will make $24.8 million next season.
Atlanta missed the playoffs this season.
“For the Hawks, this would be another bet on Young, who’s still only 25 years old and led Atlanta to a conference finals prior to the all-in trade for Murray,” Bailey wrote. “It’d give them more depth at both forward and guard, some potential in Hood-Schifino and draft capital to offset what they gave up for Murray.”
