NBA superstar Stephen Curry is happy the Golden State Warriors signed Steve Kerr to an extension because he doesn’t want to play for another head coach.
“Hell no,” Curry told Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic.
The Warriors signed Kerr to a two-year, $35 million extension, making Kerr the highest-paid coach in NBA history.
Kerr’s deal was set to expire at the end of this season. His $17.5 million-per-season extension takes him through the 2025-26 season. The extension aligns him with the two years left on Curry’s contract.
“That’s the same (years) as my contract,” Curry said. “I just realized it.”
Kerr joined the Warriors in 2014. Since then, the Dubs have played in six NBA Finals and won four championships.
Curry has won two regular-season MVPs and one Finals MVP under Kerr.
“There’s a handful of player-coach and trio-coach stories in league history that are comparable to ours,” Curry said. “And that’s not by accident. … He’s been such a consistent presence. Not just the X’s and O’s, but of managing the lows and the highs, mainly the highs, that we’ve been at. People think it’s easy. But with success comes expectation. The nuance of keeping things together and managing not just in here, but managing up as well, it’s hard. It just reminds you of the special personality and character you have to have to do this job.”
Kerr, with the help of Luke Walton, coached the Warriors to 73 wins during the 2015-16 regular season, the most in NBA history. Curry, the greatest shooter of all time, has a close relationship with Kerr.
“Obviously, people talk about him having a blessed roster coming in, which he did,” Curry said. “That doesn’t necessarily guarantee that the fit was going to work. Also, he’s never been the one, even from Day 1, who said he was the reason or the key. … He’s never had the aura that it’s him and only him. That was key.”
