One NBA executive told Michael Scotto of HoopsHype that the Golden State Warriors will re-sign Klay Thompson this summer.
Thompson, who has spent his entire career with the Warriors, becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
“Klay’s not going anywhere,” one NBA executive predicted while chatting with HoopsHype. “The Warriors can’t let him walk. He’s a four-time champion, and they can’t really replace him. At some point, if a player isn’t getting the job done and still wants to play as he gets older, you’d come off the bench, and he’s doing that while playing better. Maybe they tie his deal to Steph’s. Klay’s value is in the $20-25 million range.”
Thompson wants to retire with the Warriors, who have won four rings in the Thompson-Stephen Curry–Draymond Green era. Even though Klay is not the player he once was, it would shock many people around the NBA if the Warriors didn’t re-sign the sharpshooter.
“It would be awesome and an incredible feat,” Thompson told HoopsHype. “Only so many players have stayed with one franchise for so long and had so much success. It would be incredible.”
Thompson is averaging 17.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists this season while shooting 42.2% from the field, 37.9% from beyond the arc and 91.5% from the free-throw line. He’s coming off the bench now for the first time in his Hall of Fame career.
“I’m all about winning,” Thompson told HoopsHype. “Our franchise has been like that since I’ve been here. Andre Iguodala made the same sacrifice. He came around and got Finals MVP. I’m not saying I’m going to do that this season. I’m still playing 25-30 minutes a night, and especially 13 years in and after the injuries I overcame, it’s still an incredible accomplishment and still being a heck of a player out there. I’m scoring at all three levels, playing defense, and having fun.”
