According to NBA reporter Bennett Durando of the Denver Post, Jamal Murray and the Denver Nuggets will likely agree to an extension after the Olympics.
Murray is playing for Canada.
“With one year remaining on his current contract, Nuggets guard Jamal Murray is eligible for up to a four-year, $208.5 million extension this summer, and The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported in June that the two sides are expected to agree to a max deal this offseason,” Durando wrote. “So why hasn’t that extension been signed yet? Extension talks are temporarily on the back-burner right now, but Murray and the Nuggets will likely come to an agreement after the Olympics are done, according to a league source.”
Murray will make $36 million next season in the final year of his contract. He signed a five-year, $195 million deal with the Nuggets in 2019.
One of the top guards in the NBA, Murray averaged 21.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.7 blocks in 2023-24 while shooting 48.1% from the field, 42.5% from beyond the arc and 85.3% from the free-throw line.
The Nuggets went 57-25 in the regular season. They beat the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the playoffs in five games but lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round in seven games.
Denver won the 2023 title against the Miami Heat in five games.
Murray was the seventh overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft out of Kentucky. He has career averages of 17.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.3 blocks.
Denver lost Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to the Orlando Magic in free agency and signed Dario Saric, who played for the Golden State Warriors this past season.
The Nuggets’ core of Murray, Nikola Jokic, Aaron Gordon and Michael Porter Jr. will remain intact. Many NBA execs expect Denver to win the championship next season after coming up short this year in its title defense.
