According to NBA reporter Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the Golden State Warriors tried to acquire Karl-Anthony Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Trade talks between the Warriors and Timberwolves didn’t go anywhere and Minnesota traded Towns to the New York Knicks.
“In the last couple of months, the Warriors and Timberwolves had a conversation about Karl Anthony-Towns, league sources said, but it didn’t go anywhere,” Slater wrote. “The Timberwolves targeted a specific package from the Knicks that the Warriors didn’t possess.”
Towns averaged 21.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.7 blocks for the Timberwolves last season while shooting 50.4% from the field, 41.6% from beyond the arc and 87.3% from the free-throw line.
A four-time All-Star, Towns has career averages of 22.9 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 0.8 steals and 1.3 blocks. He was the first overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft out of Kentucky.
Towns, who has made two All-NBA teams, signed a four-year, $221 million extension in July 2022. He will make $49.4 million this season.
The Warriors lost Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks and signed Kyle Anderson, Buddy Hield and De’Anthony Melton.
Last season, the Warriors missed the playoffs after losing the 9-10 play-in tournament game to the Sacramento Kings.
Stephen Curry, the greatest shooter in NBA history, signed a one-year, $62.6 million extension with the Warriors this offseason. The future Hall of Famer is under contract now with Golden State through the 2026-27 season.
Curry appeared in 74 games last season. He averaged 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists while shooting 45.0% from the field, 40.8% from beyond the arc and 92.3% from the free-throw line.
The Warriors drafted Curry with the seventh overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. Curry, who turns 37 next season, has career averages of 24.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 6.4 assists. He’s won four championships, two MVPs, one Finals MVP and two scoring titles.
The Warriors tried to trade for Paul George and Lauri Markkanen this offseason. However, no deal was made for either All-Star.
