According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Boston Celtics could look into trading Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday.
The Celtics, who were sold for $6 billion, are a second apron NBA team.
Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Derrick White are said to be untouchable in Boston.
“The two major salaries that league figures are monitoring in possible future trades: Kristaps Porziņģis and Jrue Holiday,” Fischer wrote. “Porziņģis’ injury-plagued season, following an incredible debut season in Boston, figures to be something that the Celtics have to consider when weighing their options this summer. The Latvian big man holds an expiring $30.7 million salary for 2025-26 that could emerge as movable money. In a vacuum, swapping out KP for a player with a two-years-of-service minimum contract could save Boston roughly $218 million in taxes, dropping their extra charges to just $63 million.
“Holiday’s three seasons and $104 million owed after this one loom as a far pricier contract given the Celtics’ considerable second apron challenges and thus could make him Boston’s most logical rotation stalwart to deal. In addition to White, Boston also has Payton Pritchard in the midst of a breakout as one of the league’s leading Sixth Man of the Year candidates and a rising contributor to help fill any future Holiday void. Plus there’s been tangible optimism emanating from the Celtics regarding first-round pick Baylor Scheierman’s development with G League Maine this season to assist with softening any post-Holiday blow.”
The Celtics are looking to win their second straight title this season. They are in second place in the Eastern Conference standings.
A group led by Bill Chisholm, managing partner at Symphony Technology Group, has agreed to purchase the Boston franchise.
The group led by Chisholm, a lifelong Celtics fan born and raised in the Boston area, includes Boston business executives and philanthropists Rob Hale — a current Celtics owner — and Bruce A. Beal Jr.
$6.1 billion is the highest amount paid for a franchise in North American sports history.
