According to NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN, Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving will miss the remainder of the season after he tore his left ACL.
Irving suffered the injury on Monday (3/3) against the Sacramento Kings. Incredibly, the All-Star guard shot his foul shots and made both of them after tearing his ACL.
One of the best players in the NBA, Irving averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists this season while shooting 47.3% from the field, 40.1% from beyond the arc and 91.6% from the free-throw line. He made his ninth All-Star team.
The Mavericks signed Irving to a three-year, $126 million contract in July 2023. Irving has a player option worth $43,962,963 for next season.
A future Hall of Famer, Irving has played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets and Mavericks. He has career averages of 23.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.6 assists.
Irving helped the Cavaliers win the 2016 championship against the Golden State Warriors. The Duke product hit the game-winning shot in Game 7 over Stephen Curry.
Cleveland became the first team in NBA history to erase a 3-1 series deficit in the Finals.
The Mavericks, who traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis and Max Christie, will not compete for the championship this season now that Irving is out. Dallas is in 10th place in the Western Conference standings with a record of 32-30.
Davis has only appeared in one game with Dallas. The All-Star big man got hurt in his first game with the Mavericks against the Houston Rockets.
Davis played 31 minutes before getting hurt, finishing with 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks.
Doncic is averaging 22.0 points, 8.3 rebounds and 6.8 assists with the Lakers, who are 38-21 on the season. Los Angeles is in second place in the West.
The Lakers look like legitimate championship contenders with Doncic and NBA legend LeBron James leading the way.
