According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, the Los Angeles Lakers are expected to try to trade for Atlanta Hawks combo guard Dejounte Murray again in the offseason.
The Lakers came close to acquiring Murray this season multiple times, but since the Hawks wanted rising star Austin Reaves in return, LAL didn’t pull the trigger on a trade.
“League personnel expect Los Angeles, of course, to re-engage Atlanta over Murray, and New Orleans will have the opportunity to resume conversations the Pelicans held with the Hawks this week,” Fischer wrote.
The Hawks (24-30) wanted at least two future first-round picks for Murray, who is averaging 21.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.3 blocks this season. He has the same agent (Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group) as Lakers stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
A one-time All-Star, Murray has career averages of 14.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.3 blocks with the San Antonio Spurs and Hawks. He made the 2017-18 All-Defensive Second Team and won the 2021-22 steals title as a member of the Spurs, who traded Murray to the Hawks in June 2022.
Murray is making $17.7 million this season. The Washington product signed a four-year, $114 million extension with the Hawks last offseason. The extension kicks in next season when Murray will make $24.8 million.
NBA insider Marc Stein is reporting that the Hawks may trade Trae Young instead of Murray this summer. Young is represented by Paul as well, so the Lakers have already been linked to the star point guard, who is averaging 27.0 points, 2.8 rebounds and 10.9 assists this season.
The Lakers didn’t make any moves at the deadline this season. However, they did sign Spencer Dinwiddie. The Brooklyn Nets traded Dinwiddie to the Toronto Raptors, who waived the veteran.
