NBA star Luka Doncic has agreed to a $229 million extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to Martin Pavcnik of Sportklub.
Doncic can officially sign the extension on August 2.
“The American media speculated that Luka, who has been sculpting his body in recent weeks, losing several kilograms and reducing his body fat percentage, might be delaying signing a new contract since September,” Pavcnik wrote. “There were even hints that he might wait until next summer, when he would be a completely free player and available to all clubs. But it seems that the uncertainty will soon be over. Doncic is said to have agreed to a four-year extension worth 229 million US dollars.”
Doncic recruited Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart to the Lakers. He wouldn’t have done that if he weren’t happy in Los Angeles.
The Dallas Mavericks traded Doncic to the Lakers last season. Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists with Los Angeles in the regular season and 30.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.8 assists in the 2025 playoffs.
The Lakers lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the 2025 postseason in five games despite having Doncic and LeBron James. Along with Ayton and Smart, Los Angeles added Jake LaRavia this offseason.
Doncic enters next season with career averages of 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists with the Mavericks and Lakers. He guided Dallas to the NBA Finals in 2024, but the Boston Celtics beat the Mavericks in five games.
In a video released by the Lakers on July 19 called “Luka Doncic: Born to Compete, Destined to Dominate,” Doncic was asked how he wants to be known as a Laker and the 26-year-old point-forward didn’t mince words.
“The guy that brought championships to the city, for sure,” Doncic said.
