After months of speculation, wishing, hoping and praying, there’s finally a winner in the Victor Wembanyama Sweepstakes.
And that winner is . . . the San Antonio Spurs, who emerged from Tuesday’s 2023 NBA Draft Lottery with the No. 1 pick, and the right to draft Wembanyama.
Wembanyama, of course, is the 7-foot-4 French center that is expected to quickly change the course of a franchise. He is viewed as the best NBA Draft prospect since LeBron James back in 2003.
The full draft order as determined by the lottery is as follows:
- San Antonio Spurs
- Charlotte Hornets
- Portland Trail Blazers
- Houston Rockets
- Detroit Pistons
- Orlando Magic
- Indiana Pacers
- Washington Wizards
- Utah Jazz
- Dallas Mavericks
- Orlando Magic
- Oklahoma City Thunder
- Toronto Raptors
- New Orleans Pelicans
Now that the lottery has been completed, get ready for the rumors to start flying. Any team drafting after No. 2 or 3 could make its pick available in trades. And with the likes of “win-now” talents such as G League Ignite guard Scoot Henderson and Alabama forward Brandon Miller, playoff contenders will certainly come calling.
But it all starts with Wembanyama.
As Shaun Powell of NBA.com noted, this isn’t just any lottery. “This is a Generational Talent NBA Draft Lottery,” he wrote.
The NBA Draft will be held on June 22.
