Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr told NBA reporters that star point guard Stephen Curry is “tired” and “doesn’t have his energy right now.”
Curry struggled in the Warriors’ home loss to the Denver Nuggets on Monday (3/17). He shot 6-of-21 from the field and 4-of-14 from beyond the arc in 35 minutes.
“He’s tired,” Kerr said about Curry. “Steph’s been carrying us for a month. He’s been amazing. He’s tired. So we got to get him some rest. Just, you can see it. He doesn’t have his energy right now.”
The Warriors lost to the Nuggets even though Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray sat out.
“I feel fine,” Curry said after the game. “Obviously I didn’t play great at all, so everybody including coach is going to try to figure out why. Mostly the turnovers, dumb plays all night, but I had a really good run. You expect to have a level of consistency and whatnot, so when it doesn’t happen it becomes a question. I feel like more so my back I was dealing with the last couple of days, see how that responds tomorrow, but otherwise feel pretty solid.”
The Warriors dropped to 39-29 after losing to the Nuggets. They are in sixth place in the Western Conference standings.
If the season ended today, Golden State would face Denver in the first round of the playoffs.
“He’s exhausted right now,” Kerr said about Curry. “So we’ve got to absolutely consider giving him a night and getting him rejuvenated for the sake of him and the remainder of our games. But we’ll see. I think he’s been tired the last few games, and so we’ve got to find a way to get him his juice back.”
The greatest shooter in NBA history, Curry is averaging 24.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 6.1 assists this season while shooting 44.4% from the field, 39.4% from 3 and 93.5% from the foul line. He’s 37 years old.
