An Eastern Conference executive told NBA reporter Howard Beck of The Ringer that Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant always has a wandering eye.
Durant left the Golden State Warriors for the Brooklyn Nets in the summer of 2019. The NBA legend played 129 games with the Nets before requesting a trade last season and getting traded to the Suns.
“[Durant] for sure looks around,” said the second Eastern Conference exec. “Durant always has a wandering eye.”
The Suns are 33-22 on the season. They are in sixth place in the Western Conference standings. With Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal leading the way, Phoenix is expected to compete for the 2024 championship.
Durant is under contract through the 2025-26 season. The two-time champion is averaging 28.2 points, 6.6 rebounds and 5.7 assists this season while shooting 53.8% from the field, 44.3% from beyond the arc and 87.1% from the free-throw line.
A two-time Finals MVP, Durant is making $46.4 million this season. He’ll make $49.9 million next season and $53.3 million in 2025-26.
If the Suns don’t sign Durant to an extension, the future Hall of Famer will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2026.
Durant has played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Warriors, Nets and Suns. He has career averages of 27.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists. The 14-time All-Star thinks he, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and Warriors star Stephen Curry can play into their 40s.
“I was just trying to get to 10 years in the league, and that was my goal,” Durant told Michael Lee of The Washington Post. “But then once you get to nine, eight, you’re like: ‘I feel great right now. I can keep going.’”
The Suns lost to the Denver Nuggets in the 2023 Western Conference Semifinals in six games. It will be intriguing to see how far Durant and Co. go in the 2024 postseason.
