According to Sam Amick, Anthony Slater and Jovan Buha of The Athletic, the New York Knicks haven’t discussed the prospect of adding LeBron James.
LeBron can become an unrestricted free agent this offseason if he declines his $51.4 million player option with the Los Angeles Lakers.
“Despite all the focus on LeBron James’ recent trip to New York, where he sent all sorts of pro-Knicks signals that sparked speculation about that Broadway-worthy possibility, a league source indicated the Knicks’ brass has not discussed the prospect of adding James,” Amick, Slater and Buha wrote.
“Not only does the team lack the requisite salary cap space necessary to make room for James this summer, but the idea of the Knicks making moves to free up that sort of money would be seen internally as a serious setback to their long-term plan. While that could always change, it’s telling that the Knicks didn’t respond to James’ myriad messages by heading straight for the proverbial war room to figure out a plan to bring him to the Big Apple.”
LeBron met with the Knicks when he was a free agent in the summer of 2010. The King left the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat to play with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.
The NBA’s all-time leading scorer, LeBron is averaging 24.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 7.8 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.6 blocks for the Lakers this season. He’s still one of the best players in the NBA despite being the oldest player (39) in the association.
The Lakers want LeBron to retire with them, per Buha, Slater and Amick. While things can always change with LeBron, it is believed that The Akron Hammer will be on the Lakers next season.
A 20-time All-Star, LeBron has career averages of 27.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, 7.3 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.7 blocks with the Cavaliers, Heat and Lakers. He’s a four-time regular-season MVP, four-time champion and four-time Finals MVP.
