According to NBA insider Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Toronto Raptors could look to trade RJ Barrett this offseason.
The Raptors acquired Brandon Ingram from the New Orleans Pelicans at this year’s trade deadline.
Barrett was discussed in trade talks for Ingram.
“Based on conversations before the deadline, Barrett could be a trade candidate to monitor this summer,” Scotto wrote. “Barrett was discussed in trade talks for Ingram with New Orleans, but the Pelicans preferred the expiring contract of Bruce Brown and stretch-five center Kelly Olynyk, who’s owed $13.45 million next season, league sources told HoopsHype. With Trey Murphy III and Herb Jones already on the wing, the Pelicans didn’t view Barrett as a suitable fit for their roster as talks would have necessitated finding a third team, sources said.”
Barrett will make $27,705,357 next season and $29,616,071 in 2026-27, the final year of his contract. The Duke product signed a four-year, $120 million extension with the New York Knicks in 2022.
A Toronto native, Barrett is averaging 21.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and 5.6 assists this season while shooting 47.6% from the field, 35.3% from beyond the arc and 65.5% from the free-throw line.
The Raptors acquired Barrett from the Knicks last season in the OG Anunoby trade. Barrett, who turns 25 in June, has career averages of 18.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists.
Toronto is in rebuild mode. The franchise is building around Ingram and Scottie Barnes, two players who play the same position as Barrett.
The Raptors signed Ingram to a three-year, $120 million contract extension after acquiring him. Ingram was the second overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft out of Duke. He has career averages of 19.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists with the Los Angeles Lakers and Pelicans.
Ingram is currently dealing with an ankle injury. He’s averaging 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists this season while shooting 46.5% from the field, 37.4% from 3 and 85.5% from the free-throw line.
