NBA superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wants to retire with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Gilgeous-Alexander, 26, is in his sixth season with the Thunder, who have the best record in the Western Conference at 30-6.
“I can only speak for myself. I love Oklahoma City and I can’t see a world where I’m not in Oklahoma City,” Gilgeous-Alexander said, via The Athletic. “I’m comfortable where I am. I like where I am. I love the people in the organization, love the people around me, and those are the things that matter.
“I go to work every day with a smile on my face. Me personally, the market doesn’t matter. The money doesn’t matter to a certain extent. But as long as I enjoy what I’m doing at a very high level, I love the people that I’m around doing it.”
Gilgeous-Alexander is one of the top players in the NBA. He’s averaging 31.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.2 blocks this season while shooting 52.2% from the field, 35.5% from beyond the arc and 89.0% from the free-throw line.
The Thunder acquired Gilgeous-Alexander from the Los Angeles Clippers in the blockbuster Paul George trade in 2019. Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 26.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.9 blocks with OKC.
A Kentucky product, Gilgeous-Alexander has career averages of 23.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.8 blocks with the Clippers and Thunder. He’s making $35.9 million this season.
The Thunder lost to the Dallas Mavericks in the second round of the 2024 playoffs. They are looking to reach the NBA Finals this year for the first time since 2012.
