Towns is expected to return sometime in the early part of the 2024 postseason.
The Timberwolves are in third place in the Western Conference standings with a record of 44-21.
Towns is averaging 22.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.7 blocks this season while shooting 50.6% from the field, 42.3% from beyond the arc and 87.4% from the free-throw line.
A four-time All-Star, Towns has 22 double-doubles on the season. The Timberwolves look like legitimate title contenders for the first time since 2004.
The Timberwolves signed Towns to a four-year, $221 million extension in July 2022. KAT will make $49.4 million next season.
Minnesota drafted Towns with the first overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Towns has career averages of 22.9 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 0.8 steals and 1.3 blocks.
The Timberwolves have never advanced past the first round of the playoffs in the Towns era. It will be fascinating to see how far Minnesota goes in the 2024 playoffs.
Without Towns, the Timberwolves lost to the Los Angeles Lakers on March 10 and Anthony Edwards wasn’t pleased with the refs. The guard spoke about the free throw disparity between the Timberwolves and Lakers.
Minnesota shot 13 free throws, while Los Angeles went to the line 29 times. Lakers star Anthony Davis shot as many free throws (13) as the Timberwolves did as a team.
“It’s tough every night when we don’t get to the free-throw line as much as the other team,” Edwards said. “When one player shoots more free throws than your entire team, it’s tough. It’s tough to compete. When you miss a shot and they’re going to the free-throw line every time down the floor, it’s tough, man.”
