One NBA analyst proposed that the Oklahoma City Thunder and Cleveland Cavaliers execute a sign-and-trade deal.
Christopher Kline of Fansided proposed the following mock trade between the Thunder and Cavaliers:
Thunder receive: Isaac Okoro
Cavaliers receive: Kenrich Williams, Ousmane Dieng, 2025 first-round pick (via Heat)
Okoro appeared in 69 games for the Cavaliers in 2023-24. He averaged 9.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.5 blocks while shooting 49.0% from the field, 39.1% from beyond the arc and 67.9% from the free-throw line.
As a restricted free agent, Okoro can either re-sign with the Cavaliers or sign an offer sheet with another team. Cleveland would have 48 hours to match an offer sheet for Okoro.
The Cavaliers drafted Okoro with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft out of Auburn. He has career averages of 8.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.4 blocks in 279 games.
For the Thunder last season, Williams averaged 4.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.1 blocks while shooting 46.8% from the field, 39.7% from beyond the arc and 50.0% from the free-throw line. He’ll make $6.7 million next season.
Meanwhile, Dieng averaged 4.0 points, 1.5 assists, 1.1 assists, 0.2 steals and 0.2 blocks for OKC while shooting 42.2% from the field, 30.0% from 3 and 87.5% from the foul line. He’ll make $5 million next season.
In this particularly hypothetical, Okoro inks a four-year, $60 million contract,” Kline wrote in his NBA trade proposal. “That seems like a fair number — more than what Cleveland is offering, but not enough to irrevocably spoil by the time his contract expires. Last season was the best yet from Okoro. The former No. 5 pick supplied his standard excellent defense on the wing, but he also hit a career-best 39.1 percent of his 3s (and 57.0 percent of his 2s).
“There are still red flags regarding Okoro’s offensive profile, such as his 67.9 percent free throw clip. Okoro was always a shooting liability before last season. Was 2023-24 an aberration, or has Okoro meaningfully improved his jumper? His volume was still fairly low (3.1 attempts per game, compared to 2.3 the season prior), so we didn’t see a huge spike in attempts. Just a spike in makes.”
