The Washington Wizards plan to hire former Atlanta Hawks President of Basketball Operations Travis Schlenk as Senior VP of Player Personnel, according to a tweet by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Woj further reports that new Wizards president Michael Winger “lands a well-regarded talent evaluator and executive as he continues his search for a general manager.”
Back in December, Schlenk moved into a senior advisory role with the Hawks, a role in which he apparently had less of a direct say in roster decisions.
Schlenk held his position with the Hawks for six seasons, after coming over from an assistant GM job with the Golden State Warriors.
Schlenk gained a reputation for evaluating talent, landing star guard Trae Young from the Mavericks (for guard Luka Doncic) in the 2018 NBA Draft. The Hawks reached the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021.
Schlenk also is said to be the man behind the Warriors’ decision to draft star forward Draymond Green with a second-rounder (No. 35 overall) in 2012.
