The Philadelphia 76ers intend to sign point guard Jeff Dowtin Jr. to a two-way contract, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Dowtin, 27, is 6-foot-3 and went undrafted out of Rhode Island in 2020, bouncing around the NBA and G League since. As Charania noted, he appeared in 12 games for the 76ers last season, averaging 17.1 points and 5.7 assists or Philadelphia’s entry in the Las Vegas summer league.
Overall, Dowtin has appeared in 46 games with the Sixers, Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic and Toronto Raptors. Re-signing means the Sixers will be the franchise with which he has spent the most time.
In 20 G League games with the Delaware Blue Coats last season, he averaged 19.0 points and 5.3 assists.
Dowtin becomes the third reported two-way player for Philadelphia, putting it at the NBA limit. The Sixers are also expected to sign wing Justin Edwards to a two-way deal, as well as forward David Jones.
Of course, their biggest moves of the summer have involved adding well-known veterans, starting with Paul George, formerly of the Los Angeles Clippers. Center Andre Drummond (Chicago Bulls), forward Caleb Martin (Miami Heat) and guard Eric Gordon (Clippers) have also signed on.
“Yeah, I think as far as the fit, it looks amazing,” star center Joel Embiid told ESPN of the new Big Three of Embiid, George and Tyrese Maxey. “It is great, especially when you got a big … I don’t like to call myself a big, but when you got a player that posts up and that is quite a bit, you need to have willing shooters and guys that are not afraid to pull the trigger. PG, great shooter, 40%, 45 catch and shoot; Tyrese, we know great shooter, off the dribble, catch-and-shoot.
“On paper, and as far as the fit, it looks fantastic because you got both guys that can play off the ball, and they can play on ball and they’re great shooters and they can handle the ball, and then you also got me. So, yeah, it looks great.”
The Sixers lost to the New York Knicks in the first round of the 2024 playoffs in six games. The franchise hasn’t advanced past the second round of the postseason in the Embiid era.
