Joel Embiid’s sprained left foot has kept him out for a third consecutive game, with Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse suggesting that the issue isn’t a long-term concern.
Nurse hinted that the MVP candidate could return to action as soon as Sunday, according to Dan Gelston of The Associated Press. However, this latest setback for Embiid is just another chapter in what’s been a frustrating season for the 76ers, who’ve dealt with a string of injuries that have left their roster in flux.
The problem for Philadelphia isn’t just Embiid’s absence, but the fact that he’s had difficulty staying on the floor consistently this season. The reigning MVP has appeared in just 13 of the team’s 36 games, and he’s played more than two games in a row only twice.
This lack of continuity has created significant challenges for the Sixers as they struggle to build chemistry and gain momentum in the competitive Eastern Conference.
“It’s difficult with guys in and out of the lineup,” guard Tyrese Maxey acknowledged, per Gelston. “As soon as we get some continuity, as soon as we get flowing, guys miss (games). It’s really difficult.
“Guys have to kind of change their roles every single night. That puts pressure on us, man. We miss Jo, we miss (Paul George), we miss (KJ Martin). It’s hard to win in this league when you’re not healthy.”
The Sixers’ inability to keep a steady lineup has been evident in their recent struggles, including a stunning loss to the 7-31 New Orleans Pelicans on Friday, a team without Zion Williamson.
That defeat, especially after such a strong start to the season, has been one of the most discouraging moments for the franchise. At 15-21, the Sixers are now two games behind the Chicago Bulls for the No. 10 spot in the East, a position that once seemed far beneath this team’s talent level.
While there’s still time to turn things around, the Sixers’ recurring injury issues — including not only Embiid but also key players like George and Martin — continue to hinder their ability to find any real rhythm.
With Embiid’s availability still in question from game to game, Philadelphia faces an uphill battle to stay relevant in a tight playoff race.
