The 76ers may be off to a slow start this NBA season, but don’t expect Daryl Morey to sit on his hands.
According to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps, the Philadelphia front office is gearing up to be active ahead of the February 6 trade deadline. No surprises there — Morey’s track record isn’t exactly passive.
Philly’s needs? Shooting and size in the frontcourt. It’s pretty clear where the gaps are if you’ve been watching. KJ Martin looks like the most obvious trade chip on the roster, thanks to his pseudo-expiring $7.98 million contract.
But here’s the wrinkle: Martin isn’t trade-eligible until January 15. That gives the Sixers another month to figure out what they actually need, which could be a blessing or a curse, depending on how the next few weeks play out.
Meanwhile, the Pelicans are also generating buzz on the trade front. Opposing scouts have been flocking to their games, according to Bontemps and Brian Windhorst, trying to sniff out potential deals.
The Pels have been banged up and underwhelming, so naturally, they’re a team to watch. They’re expected to make at least one move to duck under the luxury tax — they’re sitting $1.4 million above it, which isn’t a massive gap but enough to warrant action.
Now, the big name in New Orleans is Brandon Ingram. He’s been floated as a trade candidate, but moving his $36 million-plus cap hit? That’s a tall order.
Several league sources told ESPN they don’t expect many — if any — players making over $20 to $25 million to get moved this season.
So, what’s the takeaway? Both Philly and New Orleans are under pressure, but their flexibility is limited. Keep an eye on Martin for the Sixers and some smaller moves for the Pels. Big deals? Probably not.
