NBA star Jayson Tatum was walking without a boot and moving comfortably at New England Patriots practice. It’s a positive sign for the Boston Celtics star, who underwent surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon in May.
But the Celtics are still preparing for life without him in 2025–26, NBA sources told Hoops Wire. The expectation remains that Tatum won’t play next season, and if he does return, it would likely be late in what the organization already views as a reset year.
Boston has leaned into cost-cutting moves this offseason, giving younger players more runway and avoiding major financial commitments while Tatum recovers. His absence leaves a massive void, but Boston is using the time to develop talent and preserve cap flexibility.
Tatum has also been spotted working out in the Celtics’ weight room, according to videos circulating on social media. That level of activity is normal given advances in surgical techniques and rehab protocols. Players often regain mobility quickly after Achilles surgery, but the return-to-play timeline is still long.
Rebuilding strength in the supporting muscles, fully healing the tendon, and regaining confidence in explosive movement are all critical steps. Even with steady progress, most players aren’t cleared for game action until 9 to 12 months post-surgery.
Tatum’s appearance at Patriots practice doesn’t alter the team’s cautious approach. But it’s another encouraging step in a long recovery process.
Tatum is one of the top players in the NBA. He averaged 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 6.0 assists last season in 72 games while shooting 45.2% from the field, 34.3% from beyond the arc and 81.4% from the free-throw line.
A future Hall of Famer, Jayson Tatum has career averages of 23.6 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists. He helped the Celtics win the 2024 championship against the Dallas Mavericks in five games.
