Warriors, Jonathan Kuminga remain far apart on new deal: ‘It’s bad for both’

Six of the top eight players from the 2021 NBA Draft have already secured lucrative extensions. Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga is not among them.

As Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle relayed, Kuminga and Golden State remain far apart on a new deal. While others from his draft class landed big-money contracts, Kuminga has yet to reach agreement, even on a modest salary.

Part of the issue is circumstance. Unlike many top-seven picks, Kuminga joined an established team with championship aspirations and never received the steady role or consistent minutes typical of high lottery selections.

That, combined with a restricted free agent market that has been unusually quiet, has created frustration.

“He apparently thinks he’s at the Cade Cunningham–Scottie Barnes level, where he should get that type of contract,” a league source told Kroichick. “It’s really a quandary. I think it’s bad for the Warriors and bad for him.”

With training camp still weeks away, there is little expectation that the standoff will be resolved quickly. Both sides may remain in a holding pattern well into September.
