Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont has begun gathering information on potential candidates to lead the team’s front office on a permanent basis following last month’s dismissal of Nico Harrison, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
That said, Dumont isn’t rushing the process. Stein reports that Dallas is comfortable operating with a committee-style structure for the remainder of the season.
Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi are serving as co-interim general managers, while minority owner Mark Cuban, head coach Jason Kidd and Dumont himself are all contributing input on front-office decisions. Dumont, in particular, has become far more hands-on since Harrison’s exit, per Stein.
One of the biggest decisions facing that group ahead of the trade deadline is whether to move Anthony Davis. According to Stein, a Davis deal is far from inevitable.
While the Mavericks understand there’s no undoing last season’s blockbuster trade involving Luka Doncic, they’re also wary of creating additional problems by rushing into a deal for Davis.
Accepting a below-market return would risk compounding mistakes already made, Stein writes, and Dallas appears determined to avoid that outcome as it weighs its options.
