Stephen Curry keeps delivering. The Warriors keep losing.
Curry has scored 87 points in his last two games since returning from a quad injury, including a 48-point night with 12 three-pointers Sunday in Portland. Golden State still walked away with a 136-131 loss, its second straight, dropping the Warriors to 13-14.
“I’m not doing my job well this year,” coach Steve Kerr said afterward, via ESPN’s Anthony Slater.
Curry passed Michael Jordan for the most 40-point games in NBA history after turning 30, but the milestone was overshadowed by a familiar collapse. Golden State surrendered 40 points in the fourth quarter and blew a 10-point lead in the final 10 minutes.
Turnovers remain the clearest issue. The Warriors committed 18 against Portland, eight by Draymond Green, and are averaging 16 per game, sixth most in the league. They are 4-11 this season when they lose the turnover battle.
“Just making bad reads, bad decisions,” Green said. “Too f—ing old to be doing that.”
The inefficiency is striking given Curry’s presence. With him on the floor, Golden State scores at a rate that would rank among the league’s best. When he sits, the offense craters to near the bottom.
“I thought we did a better job last year putting him in position to attack,” Kerr said. “We need to get back to that.”
Rotation instability has compounded the problem. Kerr used his 15th different starting lineup in 27 games Sunday, continuing a trend that has made rhythm difficult to find. Jonathan Kuminga has been out of the rotation entirely despite being healthy, and injuries have further disrupted continuity.
“I’m hoping we can correct that,” Curry said. “And have a sustained run where guys get comfortable.”
