The Nets remain the only team with true cap room, which positions them to take on unwanted salary in exchange for assets. But that advantage may not be as exclusive as it once was.
Brian Lewis of The New York Post writes that several over-the-cap teams can also facilitate salary dumps using trade exceptions, creating competition for Brooklyn. One assistant GM told Lewis that teams such as Utah and Washington are expected to be active in that space, potentially undercutting Brooklyn’s asking price.
The Nets have historically held firm on valuations, according to league sources, and it remains to be seen whether that approach holds if rivals are willing to absorb contracts at a lower cost.
Thomas Market Unclear
Brooklyn is also expected to listen on several of its own players, including Cam Thomas, Lewis reports. However, Thomas can veto any trade involving him, and league executives remain divided on his market.
One Eastern Conference executive questioned whether Thomas contributes consistently to winning, while also acknowledging his ability to score in bunches. Whether a team is willing to commit mid-level money or more remains an open question.
Suns’ Sabonis Buzz Cools
Sam Amick of The Athletic previously noted Phoenix had interest in Kings center Domantas Sabonis in the past. However, Gerald Bourget of Suns After Dark reports the Suns are not currently pursuing him.
Mavs Listening, Not Selling
Christian Clark of The Athletic reports that Dallas is open to discussing veterans but is not inclined to stage a fire sale. Rival executives told Clark they expect the Mavericks to hold onto Anthony Davis through the Feb. 5 deadline rather than move him midseason.
Pacers’ Search Continues
With Indiana still searching for a long-term answer at center, Dustin Dopirak of The Indianapolis Star examined potential trade targets the Pacers could explore as the deadline approaches.
Leaguewide Watch
Zach Harper of The Athletic outlined likely buyers, sellers, and teams expected to stand pat, while John Hollinger named several players he believes will dominate deadline chatter, including Jonathan Kuminga and more under-the-radar names such as Mike Conley, Ousmane Dieng, Jeremy Sochan, and CJ McCollum.
Kurt Helin of NBC Sports added that Nic Claxton could draw interest from Golden State and suggested the Lakers may monitor Kings guard Keon Ellis.
