It appears the Mavericks aren’t in any rush to name a permanent replacement for former general manager Nico Harrison.
After firing Harrison on November 11 and installing Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi as co-interim GMs, the Mavericks said they planned to conduct a “comprehensive” search. That process, however, is still months away.
According to Christian Clark of The Athletic, Dallas isn’t expected to hire a new head of basketball operations for “several” months. League sources view it as a near lock that Finley and Riccardi will run the front office through the February 5 trade deadline and possibly through the remainder of the season.
Both interim GMs are expected to receive consideration for the full-time job. Still, Clark reports that team owner Patrick Dumont is believed to be focused on landing an executive with prior experience running an NBA front office.
When the search does begin, likely sometime this spring, the Mavericks are expected to cast a wide net.
One familiar name has already surfaced. NBA insider Marc Stein and others have previously reported that Dennis Lindsey could be a candidate. Lindsey is a former Jazz GM, a current Pistons executive, and previously served as an advisor in Dallas. Minority owner Mark Cuban is said to be supportive of that idea.
