The Cavaliers and Clippers continue to explore a potential James Harden trade, but there’s a clear snag slowing momentum.
Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated reports the Cavs are seeking draft compensation to move Darius Garland, ideally a first-round pick or a future swap.
The Clippers, unsurprisingly, have pushed back on that ask.
And that’s where this thing stalls, at least for now.
The framework everyone keeps circling is straightforward enough. Garland to Los Angeles. Harden to Cleveland. The money works. The motivations mostly do, too.
Harden has expressed uncertainty about his future with the Clippers and wants to land with a contender.
The Cavs, meanwhile, continue to reassess the Garland-Donovan Mitchell backcourt and what the next version of this roster should look like.
But Cleveland isn’t treating Garland like a throw-in. He’s 26, under long-term control, and still viewed internally as a high-end lead guard.
If the Cavs are going to pivot toward Harden — even with his short-term flexibility and expiring leverage — they want something else attached.
The Clippers see it differently. From their perspective, absorbing Garland’s contract is already a significant commitment, and attaching premium draft assets on top of it isn’t a comfortable move.
So the talks continue. Both sides engaged. Neither blinking yet.
With the deadline approaching, that may not hold for long.
