Victor Wembanyama: ‘I’m never stepping onto the court not caring’

Victor Wembanyama didn’t need to be told what the All-Star Game was missing.

He felt it. And more importantly, he played like it mattered.

As Wembanyama made clear Sunday, intensity isn’t optional, not in a real game, not in a board game, not in something that’s supposed to represent the league at its best.

“If I’m out there, I’m never stepping onto the court not caring,” Wembanyama said. “If I might as well be out there, I might as well win.”

That mindset stood out. It also landed.

As The Athletic’s Jared Weiss noted, Wembanyama figures to be a fixture at All-Star Weekend for the next decade-plus. The league could use someone who treats the event like a responsibility instead of a chore.

The timing matters. The NBA is inching toward a transition period, with LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant closer to the end than the beginning. The question isn’t just who’s next talent-wise, it’s who actually cares enough to carry the weight.

Wembanyama, already a global figure at 22, appears comfortable with that idea.

“I’m part of something bigger,” he said. “I’m part of a big-picture mechanism.”

He also understands where he fits historically. The league is in the middle of an evolution, especially among skilled bigs, and Wembanyama doesn’t shy away from the idea that he’s helping push it forward.

“Am I participating in the change?” he said. “I think I am.”

The NBA needs its next face to bring skill, presence, and intent. Wembanyama checked all three boxes. Even in an exhibition.
