Cavs Players Organize Get-Together In Los Angeles

It’s unofficially go time for the Cavaliers, or at least plenty of them.

That’s because All-Star point guard Darius Garland has helped organize a voluntary team workout in Los Angeles, as first reported by Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor and confirmed by Hoops Wire sources.

Along with Garland, Cavs forward and All-Rookie member Evan Mobley has played a role in organizing the workout, set for next week, Fedor reported.

Most of the Cavs from last season’s team are expected to attend, although international players such as Cedi Osman currently have Eurobasket obligations. (Read more about Osman’s run with Turkey right here.) Lauri Markkanen, Raul Neto and Ricky Rubio are the other international names, though Rubio is continuing to rehab from his torn ACL.

Another absentee will be no less than Collin Sexton, a restricted free agent who remains unsigned and in the midst of contract negotiations. Sexton and the Cavs are believed to still be far from an agreement.

These sort of get-togethers are nothing new for Cleveland. LeBron James once organized them during the Cavs’ run to four straight Finals (2015-18), and as Fedor relayed, handed them off to close friend Kevin Love upon leaving for LA.

Love addressed the workouts at the end of the season, suggesting Nashville or Austin, Texas, as possible locations, Fedor wrote.

The Cavs finished 44-38 last season and with the eighth place in the Eastern Conference. But they failed to make the playoffs after losing both games in the play-in tournament.

“They captivated the city and put the league on notice,” president of basketball operations Koby Altman said of the current group. “We’re emerging as a franchise and we’re not going to surprise teams next year.”

The Cavs are expected to open training camp in the final week of September and tip off the preseason with a visit to the 76ers on Oct. 5.
