The Mavericks intend to waive veteran point guard Tyus Jones, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
Because the move is expected to be completed before the end of the day Sunday, Jones will remain playoff-eligible and can sign with a contender ahead of the postseason.
Jones, 29, is in his 11th NBA season and has built a reputation as one of the league’s steadiest reserve guards. He is known for running an offense, limiting mistakes and keeping tempo under control.
Across 738 regular-season games with Minnesota, Memphis, Washington, Phoenix, Orlando and Dallas, Jones has averaged 7.3 points and 4.3 assists in 20.7 minutes per game.
He has committed just 0.8 turnovers per contest for his career, one of the better assist-to-turnover marks among guards over the past decade.
The decision gives Dallas additional roster flexibility while allowing Jones the opportunity to pursue a playoff role elsewhere.
Stein reports the Mavericks are likely to promote Ryan Nembhard from his two-way deal to fill the roster spot.
